Description

"Color gets the credit, but gray does all the work!"  Discover a world of fluid dynamics in a workshop focusing on the wonders of black, white and gray creations.  Bring your favorite photo, or work from instructor supplied images.  Use your drawing and watercolor techniques to create NEW, multi-dimensional pieces!  A desire to experiment is required.  Basic drawing skills are always a plus!  This workshop is open to adults and teens over 16.

Supplies
  • Newsprint pad, (Newsprint is only for initial testing of techniques)
  • Drawing and/or Watercolor Papers (Strathmore Vellum 2-ply Bristol paper Arches or Lanaquarelle 140 lb cold press watercolor paper***)
  • 1 #2B Drawing Pencils //1 #HB - 2H pencil // 1 #H pencil
  • Pencil sharpener, single-edge razor blade, sandpaper
  • Soft or extra soft vine charcoal & 2-3 sticks soft compressed Charcoal
  • Soft cloth &/or chamois
  • Kneaded erasers AND General-purpose eraser (WHITE plastic recommended)
  • X-acto blades
  • Skewer sticks, bamboo sticks or long pickle sticks
  • Ink: Pelikan or Higgins, or sumei or-->generic waterproof ink)
  • Colored ink: red,yellow,blue and brown
  • Cotman (or equivalent) round watercolor brushes: #1, #3, #5 #12 & #4 flat watercolor brush (mid-sized to cover larger areas) and a Cheap 2 inch brush 1-2 (6"-8") white, plastic palettes with 8-10 wells 
  • Gulf (or white candle) wax
  • Workable Fixative  (OPTIONAL =>to preserve work)
  • Foamcore or Cardboard (to use as back for drawing)
  • Single-edge Razor Blade, Artists’ Tape and Pushpins

*** Paper sizes vary, but some standard sheet sizes are 19 x 24", 22 x 30" and larger. These can be used full size or divided into smaller sheets. Artist-grade paper brands widely available include Arches, Strathmore, Rives, Fabriano, Canson, Lana, Saunders... basic drawing (regular or smooth), charcoal/pastel (laid) For wet and dry media: watercolor, coldpress (medium), no press (rough) or hotpress (smooth); printmaking; bristol. Manufacturers listed above provide professional-grade materials that are widely available. Additional Optional Materials:

  • Bamboo brushes (small, medium & large)
  • Fine tip felt pen (ie. writing Pilot) sticks (twigs), pens (reed, drawing or crowquill)
  • Latex gloves (to protect hands)
  • Sm. Soft Brush, Cotton Swabs & Stumps (to make changes in small areas)
  • Graphite: stick and pencil (soft and hard drawing, ebony)
  • Conte: crayon and pencil (black, white, gray, browns)
  • Pastel: Rembrandt, Grumbacher, Derwent: sets or individual sticks; Nupastel Pastel Pencils: Derwent, Conte, Carb Othello Oil Pastel: Holbein, Sennelier: sets or individual sticks; wax blending stick Color Pencil: Berol Prismacolor, Eberhard Faber Spectra Caran d’Ache, Derwent, Eberhard Faber water soluble pencils
