Description
Explore vibrant, spontaneous pastels!
An added bonus: Minimal set up and put away time and very little mess to this
great drawing/painting medium. This class is designed to teach the pastel beginner
as well as the intermediate student how to handle and advance the medium to achieve
impressive techniques and the richest color results.
The first hour of each class will be devoted to demos, practicing with various
application techniques and surfaces, color wheel review, and copying from photos
vs. life. For the remainder of class, students will work on projects of their
choice or a still life set up. Some drawing experience is advised. Check
out the instructor's website at www.kcgentile.com.

Supplies
Materials list for
All level pastel:
Selection of SOFT pastels. As large a set of
Rembrandt pastels as you can afford; half stick sets are a good value. Shop
for good prices, especially Dick Blick catalogs or web site (dickblick.com).
It’s a wide range from $20 for 30 half sticks up to about $70 for the set of
90 half sticks. Rembrandt sets tend to be bright so I will recommend some
individual sticks in other values during class.
Extra soft vine charcoal
A pad of newsprint, preferably 18’ X 24”, for
preliminary sketches and to pad the drawing surface
A pad of pastel paper in light colors, no white
or black, please. Canson Mi Teintes is a good choice. You may also purchase
single sheets of pastel paper. The 18 x 24” pad is the best buy and allows
you to work large or small.
A kneaded rubber eraser.
Drawing board and tape or clips. 20” X 30” sheets
of foamcore are inexpensive and work well with large bulldog clips or
banker’s clips to hold the paper.
An inexpensive ‘stiff-bristled’ brush (such as
flat acrylic, 3/8”).
Smock or apron and towel.
WET ONES, for your hands.
Tracing paper, for covering works in progress.
Optional
Rembrandt 408.3, 408.5,
408.7,408.9, 408.10
(If you buy a set of at least 60 Rembrandts the first three are included in
the set)
Nupastel black and white pastels
Pastel pencils in colors of choice, I will make
recommendations
Exacto knife for sharpening
Stumps, for blending
Odorless spray fixative – WORKABLE
*If you are new
to pastels begin class with the first set of items. We will discuss the
‘optional’ list and any further purchases you may like to make as the classes
proceed.
